Our Guide To The Best Seats For The Rugby At Murrayfield.

A day out watching the rugby at Murrayfield, makes for a mouth watering prospect for the average rugby fan. Granted, whatever seats you get to perch your backside on in the stadium, you will witness the theatre of international rugby. However, if you haven’t yet bought tickets then you’ll likely be wondering which are the best seats in the stadium….. which are those seats that will help maximise your rugby watching experience at Murrayfield.

The best seats at Murrayfield are in the lower tier of the East stand. Seats here start closer to the pitch than the West stand. For the best overall match view, aim for seats no more than 20 rows from the front; either on the halfway line, or between the two 10 meter lines and the halfway line.

So there it is. If you’re a standard ticket holder, that is, quite simply the best place to sit at Murrayfield. That said, with a capacity of 67,144; Murrayfield is a vast stadium and there are great places to sit in all 4 stands.

Next up let’s dive in to the best places to sit in each stand of the stadium. By the end of this article you’ll have all the knowledge you need to confidently choose your seats for the rugby at Murrayfield.

Best Places To Sit In The East & West Stands At Murrayfield.

If I was buying tickets for the rugby at Murrayfield and I had the luxury of picking seats in any stand. And following that, any block of any tier in that stand; Which would I choose?

The stand(s) I would go for would be either the East or West. This is a personal choice really. While some people prefer to be at high up behind the posts, where they can get a good bird’s eye view of the game. My preference is watching the game from the sidelines. I feel somehow closer to the action, and it gives me a more balanced view of the game.

Being even more particular, I would choose the East stand. There is a 100m running track between the pitch and the West stand (often turfed over) meaning that the seats start a little further away from the side of the pitchsee below image.

It’s worth noting also that most of the hospitality seats and debentures are in the West Stand. The general view being that due to this, the East stand holds more of an atmospheric crowd.

Whether I choose to sit in the lower or upper tier would depend on which seating block I could get tickets for. So for example:-

  • I’d want seats in the lower tier if the seating block positioned me somewhere between the halfway line and the two 10 meter lines,
  • I’d be inclined to sit higher up in the stadium the further along from the halfway line the seating block is. Why? Because I’d get a better overall view of the game from this more elevated position.

Check out the table below where I’ve summarized which blocks I’d aim to sit in for the rugby at Murrayfield.

If you sit anywhere in these blocks, then you’ll be in seats in the lower tier that are between the two 10 meter lines, which is the ideal spot for a decent sideline view of the match in action.

If you like getting a close up view of the teams as they enter the pitch then you’ll want to aim for seats in either block W17 or W19, since these are right next to the players tunnel.

The Upper Tiers In The East & West Stand At Murrayfield.

As I’ve already mentioned earlier on in this post, if you’re positioned high up in the stadium you’ll get a great overall perspective of the game.

Granted, you won’t get to hear the players ‘soundtrack’, like you would if you were in the 1st 20 rows or so of the lower tier. However, you will have a fantastic view of the match.

I’ve displayed which seating blocks you should aim for in the upper tiers of both the East & West stand at Murrayfield. Sat here, you’ll find yourself somewhere between the two 10 meter lines or roughly on the halfway line; giving you a cracking view of the match in play.

If you manage to get seats in one of the blocks above, then it might be worth considering the 1st row.

  • You’ll have a bit more legroom than if you had the back of a seat in front of you.
  • Yes, you might experience people walking in front of you and blocking your view from time to time. The flip side though, is you won’t have to keep standing up to let people out of your row when they want to go and buy a drink or use the toilet.
  • You’ll find it easier to vacate your row if at any point during the match you want to go and get a drink or some food.

There Are Plenty Of Excellent Seats In Murrayfield’s East & West Stand!

Bear in mind that the seating blocks displayed in the tables above are for what I’d say are the best seats in Murrayfield’s East & West stand. What this doesn’t mean is that any other seats are rubbish!

Here’s the methodology I’d use to choose my seats in either the East or West stand:-

The further down the side of the pitch they are, the higher up in the stadium I would aim to sit.

From this more elevated position you’ll be given a great perspective of the game. Up here, you’ll have a clearer view of the action when it’s on the far side of the pitch, or down one end of the field; compared to the pitch side seats in the lower tiers.

The Best Seats In The North & South Stands at Murrayfield.

The stands behind the posts at either end of the pitch are the North & South stands. My preferred seat would always be somewhere on the sidelines, but there are many people I know who much prefer sitting high up behind the posts.

Tickets here are generally cheaper and if you have seats high up in the stand you’ll get a great bird’s eye view of the match.

If I was looking for seats in either the North or South stand, I’d be aiming to sit right behind the posts, either in the last view rows of the lower tier, or in the upper tier.

I’ve displayed which blocks I’d go for in the table below.

If I were to choose any of the seating blocks in the lower tiers, I’d aim for rows set further back as they’d position me higher up in the stadium, giving me a much better overall view of the match.

What Are Platinum Tickets At Murrayfield?

All the seats at Murrayfield are split into categories. Which category a seat is in will depend on where it is in the stadium and subsequently how much it will cost.

Platinum seats at Murrayfield are the top category of ticket, and the most expensive. You will find platinum seats in the lower and upper tiers of both the East and West stand, in locations that will give you the best match viewing experience in the stadium.

The seating blocks displayed in the table earlier on in this post, where I wrote about my preferred seating in Murrayfield’s East & West stand; are all platinum seats.

Are All The Seats At Murrayfield Covered?

Although the seats at Murrayfield are undercover, it is important to note that it is an open air stadium and as a result it is open to the elements. Don’t be fooled by the fact the seats are undercover. If you are in the front rows of the lower tiers, and it rains, you will feel it.
