6 Ways To Get From Kings Cross To Twickenham Stadium.

If you’re making the journey to Twickenham Stadium, and you’re also having to travel to London first, then you might well find yourself arriving at, or near to, Kings cross.

Getting from Kings Cross to Twickenham will depend on the transport type you choose, or for that matter, you might want to avoid; and how much walking you want to do. Here’s my suggestion of how you could make the journey.

You can take the tube, then train, followed by a short walk to the stadium. You could take the bus from Kings Cross, which involves at least two changes. Another option would be to take a taxi. Finally, you could combine all or some of these transport types, depending on what works best for you.

Chances are you’ll have travelled a fair distance to Kings Cross and as a result may have a few bags on your person.

Twickenham’s bag policy is pretty strict (check out this post I wrote on what you can & can’t take into twickenham for more details on what you’re allowed to take with you), so I’d suggest you to consider using a bag storage facility.

There are plenty to choose from within a stone’s throw of Kings Cross Station. And storing your luggage here, rather than in Twickenham, will lighten your load before starting the final stage of your journey.

If you want to learn more about where you could store your luggage, take a look at this article I wrote on the different bag storage providers you could use on match day at Twickenham.

Next up I’m going to explain 6 different ways you could get from Kings Cross to Twickenham and give you enough guidance on each so that you can decide on which travel methods might work best for you.

If you already know which type of public transport you want to use to make your journey to the stadium, then just jump straight to that section of this post by clicking on any of the buttons below.

1. Tube & Train

Twickenham has a train station, but not an underground; so you’ll need to take a mix of tube and train to get to the stadium. Here’s how to do it…..

Whether you’ve arrived at Kings Cross Station, or St. Pancreas International, you’ll need to take the short walk to Kings Cross St. Pancreas tube station. This should take you around 4 minutes.

From here you then have a few options as to how to get to Twickenham. It’s much easier to present these options in table format, which I’ve done for you below:-

Tube & Train To Twickenham - Option 1. Approx 53 minutes.

The stadium itself is just over half a mile from Twickenham station and will take you around 14 minutes to walk.

If however you’ve not yet had enough of public transport, you could jump on either the 281 or 681 bus. You’ll be able to get one every 10 minutes from Twickenham station (stop B) and it will take you to Twickenham Stadium (stop N).

2. Tube & Bus

Perhaps you’re not one for using the railway. And so you’d rather take the tube, and catch a bus (the tube ride will shorten the duration of the journey compared to taking a bus all the way) to the stadium.

If this is more up your street, then check out the tables below, in which I present the different route options available to you. Do bear in mind though that the duration of this journey will vary depending on the volume of traffic en route.

Tube & Bus To Twickenham - Option 1. Approx 1 hour 11 minutes.

3. Bus & Train

For those that don’t like the underground experience and for that reason would prefer to stay on overground public transport, then taking the bus & train is a good option to think about.

Each of the options in the tables below will take you as far as Twickenham Station. From here the stadium is a 14-minute walk.

As I mentioned earlier in this post, if you don’t fancy walking all the way from here (it’s really not that far!), you could take the bus from Twickenham station (stop B), to Twickenham Stadium (stop N). Either the 281 or 681 bus is the one to get; they pass by Twickenham Station every 10 minutes.

4. Walk & Train

The fourth way you could get from Kings Cross to Twickenham is on foot and by train. Although there are a few changes to make, if you time it right, so there isn’t too much waiting on the platform between changes, then the journey is relatively painless.

Walk & Train To Twickenham - Option 1. Approx 1 hour 18 minutes.

The route presented in the table below includes taking the London Overground, which is technically the tube. However, because it journeys overland, I decided to include it in the ‘Walk & Train’ section of the post.

5. Bus & Walk

If you’ve time on your hands, and you want to be entertained on your route to Twickenham, by watching London slowly pass you by then you can make the journey on foot and by bus. There are four different routes you could take, which I’ve displayed in the tables below.

I haven’t listed the duration of the routes in the tables below as they’re so heavily dependent on traffic flow. However, if you decide to make the journey from Kings Cross to Twickenham by bus, it’s going to take you somewhere between 1hr 45 mins and 2hr 45 mins.

6. Taxi

This is the fastest, and as you’d expect, most expensive way to get to Twickenham from Kings Cross. It’s also heavily reliant on traffic conditions, which are hard to predict. On a good run though, you could expect the journey to take around 25 minutes.

The one predictable element on match days is that the closer you get to Twickenham, the more congested it will be. And remember…. the longer your journey takes the more expensive the fare.

My advice, if you’re planning on taking the taxi from Kings Cross to Twickenham, is to leave with plenty of time on your side, with the aim of getting to (or near to) the stadium with a good few hours to spare. This will give you the best chance of little congestion near the stadium.

Arriving this early will leave you ample time to explore either the stadium surroundings, or Twickenham itself. You’d also have enough time to grab a bite to eat or go for a drink, before heading into the stadium itself.

If you want a few pointers on things to do with a few hours to kill before the match starts, then I’d encourage you to have a read of this post I wrote on where to go before the rugby at Twickenham.

The Cheapest Way To Get From Kings Cross To Twickenham.

Unsurprisingly, the cheapest way to get to Twickenham from Kings Cross, takes the longest; this is by bus. However, if you have time on your hands, are happy seeing the sights of London pass you by on your journey, and you want to save your pennies; then the London bus service might be the one for you.

You’ll have a few changes on your route and the time can vary drastically due to traffic conditions on the day. If you take the bus it’ll cost you (at the time of writing this article) £3.30 anytime.

How Long Does It Take To Get From Kings Cross To Twickenham?

The time it takes to travel to Twickenham from Kings Cross, depends on the combinations of public transport (that I’ve written about above) you decide to take. Once you’ve chosen on your preferred method of transport, the time will also vary depending on which route you end up choosing.

Also, as I’ve stated various times in this post. If you choose to take the bus or a taxi, then the time to get there will be heavily dependent on the amount of congestion on the roads.

I’ve listed below the average time it’ll take on the different combinations of public transport that I’ve written about above. When it comes to Bus or Taxi, the times listed are on a good run with little congestion on the roads.

  • Tube & Train – 50 minutes
  • Tube & Bus – 1 hour 14 minutes
  • Bus & Train – 1 hour 17 minutes
  • Walk & Train – 1 hour 19 minutes
  • Walk & Bus – 1 hour 45 minutes
