Paddington To Twickenham Stadium – 6 Ways To Get There.

If you’re having to pass through London, before then taking on the final leg of your journey to Twickenham; then there’s a fair chance you could find yourself arriving at Paddington.

Your experience of travelling from Paddington to Twickenham relies heavily on which type of transport you choose, or perhaps may want to avoid; and how much of the journey you want to do on foot. So here is my suggestion of how to get to there.

Take the tube, then the train to Twickenham Station. From here, the stadium is just a 14-minute walk. This is the most time reliable and efficient way to make the journey. You can also take the bus, the train, the bus and tube, or the bus and train. Finally, you could take a taxi to the stadium.

There’s a fair chance that you’ll have been on a bit of a journey by the time you get to Paddington and as such may have quite a bit of luggage with you.

The bag policy at Twickenham is not lenient (take a look at this article I wrote on what you’re allowed to take into the stadium for more details on what you can take in with you on match day). So if you do have a number of bags on your person, then you might want to consider using a bag storage facility.

Being such a large train station, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to where you could store your luggage in Paddington. And doing this here, rather than nearer to the stadium will make the last leg of your journey that much easier.

If you want to research where you could store your luggage, check out this post I wrote on the different bag storage providers you could use on match day at Twickenham.

Next up I want to cover the 6 different ways you could get from Paddington to Twickenham. I’ll give you enough information on each, so that by the end of this post, you’ll be able to make an informed decision as to how you’re going to make the journey.

If you’ve already got an idea as to what public transport services you want to use to help you on your way to Twickenham, then just click on one of the buttons below. It’ll take you straight to the section of this post that’s relevant to your travel needs.

1. Tube & Train

Twickenham doesn’t have an underground station. Good news though, is that it has a train station. So you’ll have to take the tube, then the train to get to the stadium. Here’s how……

Once you’ve arrived at the train station, and dropped off any luggage in a bag store facility nearby, you’ll need to head down to Paddington’s Underground Station.

There are various tube & train route combinations you can take to get from here to Twickenham. I’ve displayed these in the tables below for you.

Getting from Twickenham Station to Twickenham Stadium will take roughly 15 minutes to cover the half mile distance on foot.

However, if you don’t want to walk it, you could take either the 681 or 281 bus from here. They pass by Twickenham Station (stop B) every 10 minutes and will take you to Twickenham Stadium (stop N).

2. Tube & Bus

Another easy way to travel from Paddington to Twickenham is taking the London Underground to a tube station a couple of miles or so away, and then catching a bus to get you that bit closer to the stadium.

If the thought of taking the tube and bus works for you, then have a look at the tables below where you can see the different routes you could take from Paddington to Twickenham.

Remember though, that because the latter stage of your journey will be on the bus, journey times will be dependent on congestion levels on the roads that day. And….. being match day, congestion levels will be high.

Tube & Bus: Paddington To Twickenham - Option 1. Approx 1 hour 15 minutes.

3. Bus & Train

If you’d prefer to avoid the tube and keep your travel movements above ground only; then it’s worth considering making your journey on a combination of bus & train.

Bus & Train: Paddington To Twickenham - Option 1. Approx 1 hour 17 minutes.

If you choose a route where the train is the last leg of the journey, and you’re not up for the 14 or so minute walk from the train station to the stadium; then you could always catch the bus.

Either the 281 or 681 bus is the one to get; they pass by Twickenham Station every 10 minutes. Bear in mind though, that for some buses diversions will be in place on match day. They’ll still be running, but may be taking alternate routes.

4. Walk & Train

If you don’t mind a bit of walking across town, then the fourth way you could get to Twickenham from Paddington is on foot and by train. There are a few changes to make, so it’s worth planning your timings in advance; do this, and you’ll minimise waiting times on the railway platforms between changes.

The routes in the tables below include taking both the London Overground and the Elizabeth Line. Neither of which are traditional trains. They do however provide you with an efficient solution to your journey whilst avoiding the tube and the bus.

5. Bus & Walk

You can also make the journey from Paddington to Twickenham on foot and by bus. Unsurprisingly this will be the slowest way of getting there, but if you don’t mind taking it slow and doing a bit of sightseeing then it’s definitely an option worth considering.

There are 3 different routes you could take, which I’ve displayed in the tables below.

You’ll notice that the tables below don’t display how long each route will take. This is because the duration of each route will vary significantly, depending on the amount of traffic on the roads. However, if you end up travelling by bus from Paddington to Twickenham, you can expect it to take somewhere between 1 – 2 hours.

6. Taxi

Depending on how much traffic is on the roads, the taxi can be the fastest way to get yourself from Paddington to Twickenham. It is also without doubt, the most expensive. Don’t forget though, that the longer the journey takes, the more expensive the fare.

If you were to experience little traffic, you could expect the journey to take 40 minutes. But let’s be realistic. This is likely to be match day on which you’re taking the cab and as such there will be congestion, and it will get busier the nearer to the stadium you get.

If I were to be in the luxurious position of catching a cab and I wasn’t planning on getting to the stadium with much time before kick off; I’d most likely get the driver to drop me off a mile or so from the stadium. I would then walk the final leg, in order to avoid wasting time and money sitting in traffic.

On the other hand, if I was planning to get to the stadium (or near to it) at least a couple of hours before kick off. I’d likely have a smooth run all the way to the stadium, because the journey wouldn’t be affected by match day congestion this early.

Arriving a few hours before kick off will leave you ample time to explore either the stadium surroundings, or Twickenham itself. You’d also have enough time to grab a bite to eat or go for a drink, before heading into the stadium itself.

It’s important to note that time does fly pre match. A couple of hours can go by in a flash, so if you’re wanting to explore, or grab a bite to eat somewhere, then make sure to arrive with plenty of time to spare.

Check out this article I wrote on the places you could visit before the rugby at Twickenham if you’d like some ideas as to what you could do before the match if you had time on your side.
