1. Train

Twickenham train station is situated on South Western Railway’s network. This is good news if you’re making the journey here from Waterloo, as there are several different train routes on the network that you could take. And all of them are direct trains to Twickenham. In other words, you won’t need to change.

The duration of the journey will vary depending on which route you choose; this will be anything from 20 to 45 minutes. Undoubtedly, taking the train is by far the easiest and quickest way to get yourself from Waterloo to Twickenham.

Bear in mind though, that on match days the trains can get pretty busy. For that reason, expect longer waiting times on platforms due to full trains. If you want to try to avoid the crowds, then it might be wise to think about using a different, less direct form of transport.

If you are heading to Twickenham for the rugby, or another event that’s being hosted at the stadium; then you’ll have a 15-minute walk from the station to the stadium.

If you don’t fancy the walk, you can always take the bus. Either the 681 or 281 stop at the station every 10 minutes or so. Jump on one of these, and it’ll take you to Twickenham Stadium (stop N).

2. Tube & Walk

If you want to avoid the crowds that you will encounter on the train journey to Twickenham on match day, and you don’t mind a bit of a stroll to the stadium from the nearest tube station(s); then why not jump on the tube.

In fact, it’s worth noting that if you don’t fancy the longish walk from the tube station to the stadium, there’s good news. Twickenham Stadium offers a shuttle bus service to and from both Richmond and Hounslow East Underground stations on match / event days when the crowd is expected to be more than 35,000.

The shuttle bus service costs £3.00, the journey taking approximately 10 minutes from Hounslow East, or 15 minutes from Richmond.

The one way tube journey will cost you less than on the train. And better still, on the London Underground, kids under the age of 11 travel free if accompanied by an adult.

Another option available to you if you’re wanting to travel from Waterloo to Twickenham is to take the bus. Granted, the journey takes a little longer. On the flip side though…..

  • It is cheap when you consider the other options – and like the tube, kids under the age of 11 travel free if accompanied by an adult.

4. Taxi

Taking the taxi has the potential of being the fastest way of getting yourself from Waterloo to Twickenham Stadium, but it is also the most expensive.

If you’re going to take a London taxi, you can expect to pay at least £60. And don’t forget; if your taxi ride is affected by congestion levels, the fare goes up! And there’s one certainty, which is if you’re travelling to Twickenham by taxi on match day, congestion levels will be high.

On a good run, you could expect this journey (which is around 12 and a half miles) to take about 25 minutes. But let’s be realistic. Match day means plenty of traffic, along with road closures and diversions. So you can expect to be in the taxi for over an hour at least.

As such I’d suggest that if you’re planning on getting a taxi to the stadium and wanting to arrive shortly before kick off. To get dropped off a mile or so from Twickenham and walk the last bit. This will save you the bother of sitting frustrated in traffic with the fare going up.

If however you’re aiming to get to the stadium a good few hours before the match starts, then you could expect a journey that is going to be relatively unaffected by match day traffic and road closures.

Getting there this early will leave you with enough time to head on down to Twickenham and explore this picturesque suburb and perhaps frequent a restaurant, or pub for a drink and/or meal, before heading on into the stadium for the match.

Do bear in mind though that the hours seem to pass very quickly amongst all the pre match hype and excitement. So if you are wanting to have an amble around Twickenham and grab a drink or meal before the game; you’d be wise to give yourself plenty of time to do so.
